The first wristwatch and founding piece with its famous tonneau shape – the Kalpa is the iconic watch from the Parmigiani Fleurier collection in many ways.
Michel Parmigiani started to design the Kalpa from the side. It seemed to him that the lugs of watches are often mismatched with the case, clearly designed as an afterthought. He wanted the lugs of his first model to be completely harmonious and seamlessly integrated into the whole. He therefore started with the lugs. To draw its teardrop-shaped contours, Michel Parmigiani relied on the golden ratio and its natural proportions. Once the design of the profile was complete, the front-facing tonneau shape of the case middle naturally followed. It seemed to flow obviously from the well designed profile. Ever since, the same profile can be found on all of the brand's timepieces and is the distinctive feature and keystone of every creation.
The Kalpa collection encompasses a vast range of models, including self-winding calibres, grand complications such as the minute repeater or tourbillon, and a women's collection with altered proportions. However the range's flagship piece remains the Kalpa Hebdomadaire, Michel Parmigiani's first creation, with its power reserve of 8 days.
