The Tonda Métropolitaine Sélène Galaxy is an elegant and refined creation. This feminine interpretation of a great mechanical watchmaking classic displays the moon in all its cosmic glory, in the centre of an aventurine dial representing a star-filled sky.
The Tonda Métropolitaine signature design element is the case made of steel, which is for its look as much as its modernity, with taut lines and a silhouette finer than those of the other great classics from the Manufacture. The subtlety of the design is accentuated by an asymmetrical case that flies in the face of convention. The drop-shaped lugs on the left profile are a hallmark of the brand, with perfect lines inspired by the golden ratio. To the right, the lugs extend to encompass the space around the crown, ensuring that this profile stands out.
Beyond its conventional execution, two discs disappear and emerge from behind wisps of cloud, with a remarkably detailed and striking depiction of the moon given a dreamlike quality by the myriad detailing. With a russet colour rather than the traditional gold, its exceptional surface is peppered with craters – the lunar maria – achieved through a layering of decals that must have required incredible craftsmanship.
The elegance of the model is enhanced by a midnight-blue aventurine dial whose surface, mottled with fine sparkling fragments, scintillates like stars in the night sky. Aventurine owes its characteristic textured appearance to small inclusions of metal. Parmigiani Fleurier showcases the natural texture of this material to bring this particularly poetic piece to life.
The Calibre PF318 is an automatic-winding mechanical movement. Its two series-coupled barrels ensure 50 hours of autonomous and exceptionally regular operation. Its pendulum beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. Comprised of 205 components, it combines the display of hours, minutes, seconds and the date with the lunar phases. Its moon-phase mechanism is driven by a gear set in motion by the hour wheel, which turns twice as slowly as the former does. Thus, once every 24 hours this gear drives the moon disk by means of a flexible blade integrated into the centre of its wheel.
