The Toric Capitole represents the passage of time in its most literal sense. The numerals flow and move in a sequence around the calibrated time scale, lending a certain poetry to the act of reading the time. This Haute Horlogerie piece pays tribute to the unique array of watchmaking artefacts that is the Edouard and Maurice Sandoz Foundation collection, which was entrusted into the care of Michel Parmigiani before he launched his own brand.
The dial of the new Toric Capitole, in solid rose gold, is hand engraved by a master artisan engraver who has left his lasting mark on the piece. The concentric pattern of the decoration evokes the arrangement of the scales on a pine cone – one of the innumerable examples of the Golden Ratio seen in the natural world.
The PF321 calibre features a module dedicated to the sector time display. This module, directly meshed with the hour wheel, incorporates a rotary system comprising three planetary gears with four arms, each end of which bears a numeral to indicate the hour (1 to 12). The time is displayed in a semi-circle on the upper half of the bezel, on a dial comprising 60 minute indexes. The set of discs is driven via a highly complex cam system.
The distinguishing feature of the Toric family is the bezel, with its instantly recognisable alternating gadroons and knurling. The knurling is created at the watchmaking centre by a craftsman, who spreads the material using a roller that leaves its imprint in the metal. This craftsman has produced every knurled bezel in the Toric family since the brand was founded. Each knurled pattern produced in the workshop is unique – just like each Toric.
Hand-wound, minute repeater & sector display movement
The PF321 movement has a minute repeater with an additional module for the sector time display. The minute repeater sounds the hours, quarter-hours and minutes on two "cathedral" gongs, so called because they form two sets around the case. A flywheel ensures that the mechanism operates silently, so that the only sound is the melodious chime each time the gong is struck. This exceptional movement features only the finest Haute Horlogerie finishes, including Côtes de Genève decoration on the rhodium-plated bridges, and hand bevelling that brings a stunning play of light to each surface.
