Working malachite on the scale of a wristwatch is a huge technical challenge. The thinness of the cut makes the stone very fragile. Then, 24 minuscule holes must be drilled into it to secure the 12 indices. The slightest scratch or crack in this process will completely ruin the dial. Behind each of these 50 limited editions there are dozens of blanks which attest to the patience of the craftsman and the uniqueness of each dial.
The Tonda 1950 is the aesthetic essence of Parmigiani Fleurier as it showcases all the brand's signature codes – and nothing else. The thin, slender profile with the two emblematic lugs; the cut round crown; the delta-shaped hands. Simplicity is key, but each of its proportions has been carefully calculated to create a coherent elegance and harmony that draws in the gaze.
Three years of research and development were needed to successfully create the PF702 calibre, an ultra-thin automatic movement. The main challenge was to incorporate the rotor into the calibre itself without adding to its thickness. The solution was to integrate a micro-rotor made from tungsten, to ensure inertia, into the calibre, which joined the Parmigiani Fleurier range of movements.
