1950 was the year Michel Parmigiani was born. The name of the Tonda 1950 is a tribute to Parmigiani Fleurier's founder, while its design marks a return to the brand's fundamental visual identity, which it highlights with its pure lines. This ultra-thin watch is making a reappearance with a dial made from a spectacular material - meteorite rock from outer space.

Design: Parmigiani Fleurier's DNA

The Tonda 1950 is the aesthetic essence of Parmigiani Fleurier as it showcases all the brand's signature codes – and nothing else. The thin, slender profile with the two emblematic lugs; the cut round crown; the delta-shaped hands. Simplicity is key, but each of its proportions has been carefully calculated to create a coherent elegance and harmony that draws in the gaze.

An ultra-thin automatic movement

Three years of research and development were needed to successfully create the PF701 calibre, an ultra-thin automatic movement. The main challenge was to incorporate the rotor into the calibre itself without adding to its thickness. The solution was to integrate a micro-rotor made from platinum, to ensure inertia, into the calibre, which joined the Parmigiani Fleurier range of movements.

A unique meteorite dial

Mysterious and fractal – those are apt descriptions of the meteorite adorning the dials of this Tonda 1950 special edition. When it passes through the atmosphere, a meteorite endures a temperature change so brutal that it alters its crystalline structure forever. This structure is revealed by a series of alkaline baths, which uncover the famous "Widmanstätten patterns" vein by vein and which tell of their singular journey through the atmosphere. Each meteorite dial is unique.

PF701

Automatic movement

At just 2.6 mm thick, the PF701 calibre owes its slim profile to an off-centred micro-rotor directly integrated into the main plate. This component winds the movement, which has an autonomy of 42 hours. This calibre was developed to allow for the addition of multiple functions, such as a calendar or moon phase indication, without altering the slender proportions of the Tonda 1950 family. This serves as proof of the excellent design of the PF701 movement and its successive variations.
