The oval shape meets the 30-second tourbillon
Some shapes are fixed. The circle. The square. Then there is the oval, the outline of which changes to suit its purpose. In architecture, the oval is both strong and singular, soft and assertive. In watchmaking, Parmigiani Fleurier is the master of mysteries, designing timepieces with the power to seduce. Following on from the prestigious Ovale Pantographe, the Ovale Tourbillon is a new dazzling Haute Horlogerie complication.
Parmigiani Fleurier drew inspiration from a restoration piece to launch its original oval-shaped collection. The prestigious oval watch with telescopic hands – created by the English jewellers, Vardon and Stedman a century ago – is a true marvel of watchmaking, which came into the restoration workshops of Parmigiani Fleurier in 1997. The enchanting elliptic form of this piece captured the imagination, and gave rise to Parmigiani Fleurier's Ovale collection.
In 2004, Parmigiani Fleurier set itself a challenge never before attempted: to double the rotation speed of the tourbillon to give two rotations per minute. This proved an immense challenge, as to overcome the inertial effects of the tourbillon cage, the materials used had to be reconsidered, and innovations added to the calibre to make it more reliable. The 30-second tourbillon is a world first and a mark of true prestige. It provides double the compensation for the effects of gravity whilst increasingly the regularity of the movement's rate.
With a rose gold case in three sections and a stepped bezel, the Ovale Tourbillon boasts a truly dynamic design. Curved surfaces are broken up. Straight lines replace rounded ones. And beams of light bounce off the myriad angles this creates. The iconic Parmigiani Fleurier lugs are no exception: a graduated chamfer tapers out towards the end, lending further tension. On this timepiece, the oval adopts a new stance, an overtly masculine one with a style of its own.
Hand-wound, tourbillon & power reserve indication movement
The Ovale Tourbillon is driven by the PF500 movement designed by Michel Parmigiani. This movement features the brand's exclusive 30-second tourbillon and a double barrel, which stabilises the energy distribution and gives a spectacular power reserve of 7 days. The movement reflects Parmigiani Fleurier's watchmaking expertise and its exacting standards for finishes of the very highest quality, as demonstrated by the "Côtes de Genève" decoration and hand-bevelled bridges.
