The Kalpa Tourbillon Galaxy evokes a majestic sky full of stars thanks to its dial made of aventurine glass. The shimmering of the tiny copper inclusions inherent to aventurine glass echoes the play of light of the baguette diamonds full set. At six o’clock, a 30-second tourbillon pulsates and brings the timepiece to life.
The dial-making entity of the Parmigiani Fleurier Watchmaking Centre used aventurine glass to create this highly unique watch. The particles of midnight-blue glass are interspersed with golden copper inclusions that enhance this composition, so challenging to create on the minute scale of a dial. A baguette-set rose gold bezel continues the play of light to the very edge of the piece, to make the Kalpa Tourbillon Galaxy truly exceptional.
In 2004, Parmigiani Fleurier managed to double the rotation speed of the tourbillon to give two rotations per minute. This proved an immense challenge, as to overcome the inertial effects of the tourbillon cage, the materials used had to be reconsidered, and innovations added to the calibre to make it more reliable. The 30-second tourbillon is a world first and a mark of true prestige. It provides double the compensation for the effects of gravity whilst increasing the regularity of the movement's rate.
The shape of the Kalpa Tourbillon Galaxy case is the classic "tonneau", one of the first designs that Michel Parmigiani created for his brand. This form is based on the application of the golden ratio, a geometrical reference which provides a harmonious ratio of proportions. Set with 215 baguette-cut diamonds, totalling 11.80 carats, the rose gold case and its lugs sit ergonomically on the wrist.
Hand-wound, tourbillon & power reserve movement
The Kalpa Tourbillon Galaxy is equipped with a 30-second tourbillon which is exclusive to the Parmigiani Fleurier Watchmaking Centre. The hand-wound PF500 movement has a double barrel mounted in series, giving it a power reserve of up to one week, a rare feat for a complication such as this. The movement bridges are hand-bevelled, creating a spectacular play of light, and every surface is decorated to the highest standards of Haute Horlogerie.
